"Leila had created a successful business in partnership with her husband. The creative impulse of the idea, and the slogging hard work of getting the company on its feet, had been hers. The company was really "her baby." Now it was time to take the company public and the new investors wanted her participation but not her husband's. All her fears regarding loyalty, abandonment, the risk to her marriage and her husband's self esteem were brought to the surface by this situation. So Leila decided to use the Five Rune Spread. She drew these Runes:
Overview (Perth): The Rune of Initiation, as the Overview of the situation, immediately shifted her focus away from both her relationship with her husband and the business. "Nothing external matters here, except as it shows you its inner reflection" -- these words were key for her. She read them over and over until she realized that this was another crossroad on the path of self-change.
Challenge (Uruz): The Rune of Strength and Womanhood Reversed, indicating the need to respond consciously to "the demands of such a creative time." It was clear to her that growth at all levels -- corporate as well as personal -- was the correct decision.
Action (Wunjo): Reversed, which speaks of the process of birth being long and arduous, and about fears which arise for the safety of the child within. Again, the Runes were reminding Leila that she was undergoing a test.
Sacrifice (Nauthiz): The Rune of Constraint Reversed, the great teacher in the guise of pain and limitation. She was able to see more clearly that it was time to take a new kind of responsibility for what she had created, to own and honor it, and do what was good for the company.
Breakthrough (Dagaz): New Situation Evolving. This Rune offers the assurance that "because the timing is right, the outcome is assured, although not, from the present vantage point, predictable."

There are many casting styles, each of which serves an individual function. Casting a single Rune can help you answer specific questions, which is what I tend to do. It's really about following your intuition, and doing what feels right to you. Runes are very fascinating because many millennia ago in northern Europe, ancient peoples sought a means to understand their roles in the world at large. They created runes--an alphabet of symbols that served both as a functional writing system and as a unique system of divination.
These individuals devised a method of comprehending the past, making sense of the present, and interpreting the future using Runes carved out of natural elements such as wood, stone, or bone. In today's society, Runes can play the same role in our lives that they played in distant history.
